42 years on, the track legend of the Nike Waffle Racer goes on unrivalled and this time has arrived in a green nebula colourway. The moccasin inspired upper combines shades of nebula green nylon over suede overlays in a far more subtle eucalyptus fog, cut through only by crisp white laces. The lateral panels however introduce an amarillo yellow swoosh in leather, which joins to the heel tab below the embossed Nike spellout. Stylings are indeed kept classic with a wedge of white midsole behind a dominant black rubber outsole.
Despite looking exactly like the 1977 legend, these iterations have been modernised to include a memory foam sockliner combined with a dual density EVA midsole for supreme cushioning with every step. The shoes name stems from the treaded pattern on the outsole, designed by Nike Co-Founder Bill Bowerman himself for greater levels of traction.
Waffle tread patterns were designed in the waffle iron of Bill Bowerman’s kitchen in 1973 and secured by a patent for their unrivalled ability to provide traction on multiple surfaces. This legacy actually lay the foundation for what Nike was to become in the future and the level of innovation that was to be expected of them.
